On the first Wednesday of every month, El Marino will be celebrating Walk 'n Roll Wednesdays.

The idea is to encourage kids (and their parents) to walk or bike to school. Hopefully this becomes a regular habit that helps kids get a little more exercise and reduces the congestion around school. As a "magnet school", EMLS is particularly challenging as kids are coming from all over. But with your help, this could be really cool. We're hoping to make it as fun as possible and the more that turn out the better.

To make this work, Jim Shanman needs a little help. If you can, please consider any of the following:

1. Spread the word. Mention this to other parents and faculty (you tell 2 friends, they'll tell 2 friends...)

2. Participate. Because of timing and distance, we'll make it easy. We'll meet at US Bank (Sepulveda/Sawtelle) at 8:10 and start walking at 8:15, picking up kids along the way at Berryman. There may be a second group meeting at Sawtelle and Culver Drive (the bridge) for riders coming down the Creek Path. The coolest thing is, you don't have to walk with us if you're pressed for time. With so many others going, feel free to drop your kids with the group (of course they'll want you to walk with them)

3. Offer to lead a group. Jim needs 4 parents at each location. 2 on foot and 2 on bike. More is obviously better, but he'll take what he can get.

4. Get your kid(s) excited. Encourage them to dress in school colors or environmentally-friendly stuff, make a sign, etc. We're celebrating leaving the cars behind.. or driving less anyway.

5. We're planning to make this a monthly event, so if you can't help next week, please keep it in mind for November, December....

A couple of suggestions: If you're planning to ride bikes, please be sure to wear a helmet and bring a bike lock. Allow extra time. We know this means breaking routines and habits, but it's just one day. Maybe make lunches the night before and make sure homework is all signed and ready to go.
