Social Skills-Physical Education

Throughout the school year, students are introduced to many different social skills. Examples include respect, responsibility, good sportsmanship, and honesty. These skills and others are taught on a continual basis. The concept of " self governing " is also an important social skill that all students learn. The idea is for students to call themselves " out " when they know they are out in any game. Thus promoting honesty. All the students are taught the rules to all of the games, especially recess games. The key recess activities including handball, four square, and tether ball all have a " judge." The hope is that the judge is only called upon when there is a discrepancy. If the students playing are unsure of the outcome they can defer to the judge. If the judge calls someone out, that person may ask " why am I out?" If the judge is unable to answer this question the students replay the activity. If the judge answers with a rule violation, that player must exit the court. Each student waits their turn to play waiting in the judge line. Thus, all players need to know the rules to all the games because each student becomes a judge when they become first in line waiting to play.
