Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) committee is dedicated to influencing positive and equitable educational experiences for students at El Marino. Our goal is to create experiences and hopefully shape policy which supports the emotional health and development of students who are Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) and other underrepresented populations as they strive to navigate the surrounding school community. As an immersion school with two target languages, our population consists of students whose households encompass two or more cultures often within southern California, the United States, or across the globe, bringing a unique mixture of cultural experiences to our campus. With these experiences we hope to enlighten the school community to issues which influence the schools efforts towards creating a more unified campus, district, and city while we celebrate the beauty of the diversity we all bring.

In an effort to bring more content and exposure to all students about its BIPOC populations we are seeking motivated and passionate committee members to provide support, increase tolerance, celebrate diversity, and present developmental opportunities for students in need.  Members of our team are in regular contact with school and district administrators as well as the district-wide Diversity Equity and Inclusion Task Force to help shape change from the top down as we enter a new era of awareness. We have quite a few resources dedicated to this cause, many of which involving campus-wide education beyond the classroom.

The DEI committee started a parent book club over the summer of 2020 to bring critical national discussions on human rights to the forefront, so that parents can engage consciously in shaping a more equitable society by starting informed discussions at home. You can find us on Facebook at https://www.facebook.com/groups/561548094748854/about if you would like to learn more about, join the club or contribute to our monthly selections.

In short, we are an activated body of people who want to have an impact! If you have an issue or need that is excluding your children from realizing a positive experience at El Marino, please reach out to us. We are here to give you a voice for change.

Additionally, if you are interested in playing a critical role or providing support or please contact [email protected]. We are always looking for members who are passionate and who can also help lead in other marginalized areas: girls rights, children with disabilities, etc.

Thank you,
your PTA Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Committee
